An artist, playwright, novelist, actor and writer for a discussion on what to do to subsidize their creative passion

The Artist: Debbie Lawson

to work two or three days a week sub-issue, so for most of the week I'm in my studio, visiting art exhibitions or doing things related to your home. I make pretty good money, but not enough to live the way I want. I could probably survive as an artist, but I would not be able to go on vacation or live in a nice apartment. Some artists are willing to give up everything unique luxury. I'm not ready to live in a room and work in a cold studio. Most of my artist friends have a "bread and butter" work. I am very lucky to have a good job, I am proud that I find stimulating. I do not I have to work several days - to Other artists should spend time working in bars, waitress or teaching. My part-time work does get in the way and it's really good for me to land. I can, I spend much time in the studio churning around and think and not do much. If you have less time, tends to be used more constructively.

The best thing to do is diversify, which is what I love doing. You can earn money through art commissions, if you have the creative freedom to do anything, within reason, and get paid for their time while traveling in their practice. Commissioned by the Contemporary Art Society to make a sculpture for the Economist Plaza three years ago, and made two large pieces for Bethnal Green old commission room.

who regularly sell works too. When I got my diploma from the Royal College of Art has sold two pieces to the collection Saatchi and I got a call from Mario Testino people who want to buy the same work. About six months ago, I sold a large part of the House of Lords collection, but my gallery was 50%. If you take a gallery of 50% has to work hard for you, otherwise you might as well do it alone. I think the internet has made the gallery a little nervous. You can do this on their own without a gallery.

The recession has not affected me much more - in fact, in recent years have been pretty good. That said, I had my first solo show in London the same week that Lehman Brothers collapsed in 2008, so it was not chance, but things picked up shortly after that. Anyway, I am told that the type of people who collect art, I have not noticed the recession.

There is still funding the Arts Council to individual artists. I went to British Council funding for a solo show, I was invited to Norway, thinking nothing would come of it, and gave me some money for the expedition, which was very useful, as is usually the largest cost. Which was also funded as part of the nine stores in Dundee, which was a show specifically on artists with other work.

There are still many pieces of my work - which can be a bit frantic. Sometimes not so easy to slip out to be an artist in a day's work: they often have to travel and people want to go to his studio during office hours. Most artists reasonably well known in this country doing another job, but simply do not like to admit it publicly. Many are teachers or technicians, photographers and other artists present, but I also know that artists are RP, hairdressers and men of Ben.

playwright Archie Maddocks

My game is up in the theater of Orange, in Richmond. This is my first play, the riots of last year and spread fear. I sold it in November and since then I've had other jobs and have joined this month. You can sign up as it does not take his writing as a monthly income - to be examined in terms of number of hours I worked, which is very difficult to calculate. My job took me about three weeks to write. Right now I am signing, but I know I have a part time job as a waiter at Wembley Stadium - the security work, mostly. I am also a mortician and burial of a driver, who was a little strange the first few times, but it might even inspire other work. I can answer a multitude of different people across the security work, which is very important for a writer.

By the time we were able to spend two days a week writing, and I am totally focused on these days. But if I worked full time would be very difficult to go home and write for three hours.

thought I'd better get a degree, even though I had something to fall back on if the machine was not working - my father is an actor, so I know what income can be sporadic. Dad [Don Warrington, better known as Philip Rising Damp ] really do not want to go in the arts, but when I decided that it fully supported - although it did encourage me to do other things.

I will learn to act, so it can be in my own work - I was taking classes. But if it does not work, I had thought about creating a theater company in the communities that would not necessarily "get" the theater, I think it is very useful but can be quite intimidating if you are not of this world. And if that fails, then I'm not sure what happens next. In my dream world, I hope to continue working in the arts and make a successful living out of it, but really, if I did that for five or 10 years and I have nothing at all, there will come a time when I have to say: "This is not working ..." and put it in the bottom and find something else.

Novelist: Evie Wyld

There are two very different stages of my career. This is not the time before it is published, while working as a promotional girl boots and PC World on the old road from London, Kent

- before putting one foot in the door you're on your own. I demonstrated printers and flyers made and tell people about the foundation - which was very exciting! I was also one of those people that hideous provide samples of yogurt in the tube. If you touch the most people on the shoulder are actors, musicians or writers. Then, after my first book - after the fire a still small voice - was published, more possibilities are open. I just finished with the British Council in Istanbul, you get paid to do a job so beautiful, and talk to people in universities. There are also literary firms such as NAFTA and the cornerstone, where you send unpublished manuscripts and report on them. Much work goes into great detail, but is a form of self-employment in the same area. And asked me to write articles too. I also work in a bookstore

My agent and other writers have told me that if I had sold my book two years ago, I could have done a lot of money, but everything is slowly sinking into the canal. However, I am available, and what I do, and was not too stressful. And you have to do many things that count as a holiday, like going to different countries ... you do not live a life box.
