A study of how gender affects about problems through the meat has become too easy neurosexist media
probably should not say too much. I am a woman, you see, and scientists said that "girls [are] in danger of talking too much." It was a headline in the Telegraph. Scary stuff. If the ladies do not end our chat, every human culture can be floated chirping of estrogen infused chatter.
The title is the stereotype of the old, old gossip about women - can be seen lurking in stinging epithets as "tin", "bitch" and "fishmonger" and will frequently books popular Louann Brizendine neurosexism that is the female brain. However, when the linguist Mark Liberman has tried to support claims that women are more fickle sex, which found no evidence. "The scientific basis of [the] image of biological determinism seems to slip through your fingers when you try to understand," he wrote. So before scolding my brake caliper in place, perhaps you should read the rest of the room Telegraph.
turns out that this is not really a story about how women communicate too much, but this is the way universities and academics to communicate with the world, and what journalists do with the information obtained. The Telegraph report is based on a document to be published in the journal Child Development. Well, more or less - that seems to be based on a press release based on the document should be published, but not the name of the document and combine the results with a previous study (all of which falls below the standards you expect from a national newspaper applicable to scientific information, but it obviously will not surprise readers of Ben Goldacre).
- The document referred to the Telegraph report by Professor Amanda Rose, studies of "how girls and boys should discuss the problems are felt." What we do not study (I know because that Professor Rose was kind enough to send me a copy) is whether the girls are talking too much, too little or just enough. And although the results show differences in gender - girls are relatively more likely to s wait to talk about issues you feel better, children are relatively more likely to wait to talk about issues that he felt "weird" or unproductive - paper, Rose is careful to point out that the relationship between gender and "problem talk "is limited. "A concern is that exaggerate the effects of sex leads to stereotypes about girls and boys," he wrote. "Remember that children endorsed positive expectations more strongly than negative expectations." And in the spirit not to exaggerate the effects of sex, the University of Missouri was a press release (and confirmed by e Rose -mail, which was approved) under the title "Men believe that arguing is a waste problems of time, UM study shows." In the passage from the journal to draw attention to the news release, the feelings of self-evaluation of a minority of children have become something that is generally true for men as a whole. It's almost like no one cares all about exaggerating the effects of sex.
However, Professor Rose was just exaggerating the differences between the sexes could lead to reductionist thinking, and the Telegraph report, the investigation resulted in a commentary in the Philadelphia newspaper called, snappily, "Desperate, locked." Rose offers some explanations intelligent in his role as the way the cultural expectations of gender will be to inform the children's ideas about how to behave, but how its role has been promoted in the mix, it is deterministic - that Cordelia Fine describes as "the recycling of equality" in his great book, delusions of gender.
