broken promises, broken windshield and a passport confiscated. Tomas Brolin unveils his time at Leeds United
all know that does not end well. In fact, the fate of Tomas Brolin at Leeds United were nothing short of a disaster. Joined the club in November 1995 with much fanfare and an exorbitant price, but left two years later and started 17 with his reputation in tatters.
most observers in England that Brolin is one of the worst signings in the history of the Premier League. He mentioned there with Marco Boogers, Massimo Taibi, Bosko Balaban and Winston Bogarde. His period as a player and manager Attilio Lombardo-joint at the Crystal Palace has done nothing to change that perception.
Brolin said nothing about what made him the player who shone at the 1994 World Cup and the player who has moved away from Leeds in 1997. Until now.
In an interview opened with Swedish magazine Offside, Brolin finally gives his version of events. It is a story of broken promises, broken windshields, passports confiscated and low performance on purpose.
This is the opinion of a man, of course, but it's an interesting read. Brolin was the victim of two directors - Howard Wilkinson and George Graham - who did not understand how to get the better of him? Or had lost interest in football after his terrible ankle injury in the fall of 1994? I suspect the truth is in the center.
first a brief overview. Brolin was very clear - if I may say, as a Swede - between 1990 and 1994, one of the best players in the world. He shot to fame in 1990 when he scored against Brazil (6min 30sec into the clip) in the World Cup as a fresh-faced 18 years. In 1992, the England fans even realized he was very good with the famous Brolin, Dahlin, Brolin goal against England Graham Taylor. In these years, helped Parma became one of the best teams in Europe before reaching the peak of his career, when Sweden finished third in the 1994 World Cup.
Leeds thought they were buying a world class player. Thought Brolin was still a world class player - and should be treated as one. It is in this context. This is what happened when Brolin says he met with the manager of Leeds Wilkinson to discuss the transfer: "The first thing I asked was:" How much money do you want "I have said what was important was not the money, but my position would be on the computer. Then he pulled out a few sheets of A4 paper and began drawing things. This is the spider at the center of the canvas, pulling the strings in midfield. I was going to play the decisive pass to Tony Yeboah. Everything was great ... I signed. "
Brolin, however, had to start in attack because Wilkinson was absent due to injury players. After a half-dozen games leading the line, Brolin was changed to the right of midfield. He protested, but he says he was told it was a match. However, he was invited to play again. He did - and scored two goals in a 2-0 victory over West Ham
When, in the next game, against Liverpool, he was asked to play right-back he cracked: "It may not seem so bad to be a wide midfielder for Leeds, but the defensive responsibilities he had ... they did not when I was Roland Nilsson behind me in the Swedish national team, "he said. "In Leeds up and down the right like an idiot. It was not me. So I decided ... I would be urine of the poor against Liverpool."
Leeds lost 5-0 against Liverpoolrelationship with Leeds Brolin has not been completely repaired. In the summer of 1996, Brolin Wilkinson asked, through his people if he could play in their privileged position in the next season, but "man of blood not to hear." Wilkinson said: "We told him asked again and reminded him of his duties, but he chose to stay where you are in Stockholm Frankly, I prefer to have someone in any position of my team, I was willing to Leeds United for someone which is not. done. "
Brolin has agreed to be loaned to FC Zurich for three months, where he says he played at 800 pounds a week, showing once again he does not play football for money.
