After the euphoria of Obama's support for gay marriage, let's see if homophobia and discrimination just ended
In a sense, it was time. Recognition quite surprising that Barack Obama is in favor of legalizing gay marriage - very late, and suddenly accelerated after Joe Biden jumped the gun - means that the President has finally caught what he told a newspaper of Illinois for 16 years.
"I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages," the young man declared candidate in 1996. Wednesdays at the White House, said at the end the same thing.
Perhaps the vice president Barack Obama has done a service: by hastily convening morning and presenter Robin Roberts in Washington with the urgency of a country veterinarian calving, the president seemed more courageous than that should, after years of so, somehow, not really, wink-wink triangulation. But coverage as he did throughout his first term as cabinet members and Democrats bigwigs jumped in front of him, began to darken the highlights Obama should get more credit. Last year, he asked Eric Holder, Attorney General, to stop supporting the defense of the Ministry of Justice of Marriage Act (DOMA), which denies federal benefits to same-sex married couples. It was a decision far more important than what he did this week - and again, not for the record that he in favor of gay marriage, has received a fraction of the credit he deserved
So Obama belatedly out as an advocate of equality. But the reaction - hosanna, titles, muted tones invocations of "We Shall Overcome" - reveals more than anything gay rights in the United States have become completely out of the flow of equality in marriage, and how matter and gesture of affirmation action and justice. Nothing has changed since the bottom last week about this, but this has not prevented a columnist for the New York Times mawkishly add the hashtag # historymade tweeter to celebrate the passage. Somehow, it feels a bit like Obama's victory in 2008 alone: ??the election of a black president was "change" and the image of racial progress moved real inequalities that blacks continue to suffer.
course, the president's support is invaluable - I expected. The President is the head of the body politic, and public support larger and more widespread than for gay marriage in America becomes, the more likely it is that the United States Supreme Court justice and his swing, Anthony Kennedy, will blow for equality when Perry v. Brown, both finally comes to a file. Public opinion was no change in the practice of law, which led the court to overturn the constitutionality of sodomy laws when she decided Lawrence v. Texas in 2003. (Even people gays do not realize, however, that Lawrence did not win because the judges said that homosexuals are equal to heterosexuals, which excludes all Americans have the right to privacy in the sexual behavior, the court did not, not once felt. gays class worthy of "strict control", the highest level of protection.)
public account. When the judges finally hear arguments about marriage, it will be much easier to make the right decision if the majority of Americans, the President on down, I want to know more.
But marriage is not everything. As for women and racial minorities, homosexuals in the United States continue to be victims of harassment, hate crimes, religious intolerance and a number of other inequalities that marriage can not alleviate. Gays can be fired from their employment without cause in most states and federal employment non-discrimination legislation has yet surprisingly not legally binding, after two decades of efforts. The suicide rate among men gays are much higher than average, roaming is. Men who have sex with men also face the terrible resurgence of HIV / AIDS in the last decade, however, gays of my generation, who grew up shortly after the first phase of the epidemic in particular to show AIDS, either as a phenomenon or historical Saharan thereof.
Today, however, a single issue of gay rights has changed everyone. So much so that when he finally, inevitably, win the right to marry, gay defense may lose much of its momentum or peter into nothingness.
- I do not want to minimize the wedding. It is very important. But it is important because of its
- public
- , national character, and not by the small-scale motion says traditional marriage individualistic in much higher class. Nancy Cott, author of Public vows: A History of Marriage and the Nation and chief witness in Perry, showed that marriage in the United States, far from homophobic institution eternal imagine, has mutated considerably - but it has an understanding of citizenship and public life.
- Even before the American Revolution, the colonists rejected the Anglican tradition, which oversaw matters of marriage and religious marriage established as a civil and not a religious institution. In the 19th century, states use the marriage laws as instruments punitive discrimination against disadvantaged minorities, including Asian immigrants on the West Coast.
