United Nations and the Arab League envoy optimistic approach truce deadline Thursday - but activists report fresh bombing
Kofi Annan says he has received assurances from Syria to respect the cease-planned with rebel forces, which should begin in less than 24 hours time.
UN and Arab League envoy, speaking as activists reported fresh violence in several regions, including the bombing of rebel-controlled areas in Homs. The Syrian Observatory for Britain-based Human Rights stated that "dozens of military vehicles" were deployed in the southern city of Maaraba amid heavy gunfire.
Annan, who is in Iran for assistance from Tehran to end the violence in Syria, said he was cautiously optimistic that the situation will improve on Thursday morning if Damascus continued his word and met the deadline. However, he also warned that "any militarization of the conflict would be catastrophic."
was sent by pressing Damascus to withdraw its troops from cities and end all forms of violence to 6 pm on Thursday to save his peace plan.
Speaking to reporters in Tehran, Mr. Annan said that he and his army agreed on the need to "find a peaceful solution to the crisis."
"I have received assurances from the government will respect the ceasefire," he said. "If everyone respects, I think six Thursday morning will improve conditions on the ground."
Despite reports of the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) that 1,000 people have died in the past eight days, Annan refused to give up his plan.
"We still have time until April 12 to the end of the violence," he said Tuesday after visiting a refugee camp on the border with Turkey.
"is a plan that we are all struggling to implement a plan ... is that the Syrians were supported, as well as comments made by the opposition, who are also willing to go with it, if the government meets its commitments to pull troops. "
- rejecting allegations that his plan had failed, and Annan asked: "If you want to take on the table, which replaces"
- said that Western governments have continued to support their efforts, but used strong language to condemn Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. France has described as "unacceptable and blatant lie" that Syria had withdrawn its forces from populated areas, if necessary. William Hague, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: "There is still no evidence that the Assad regime has no intention to conclude an agreement that does." While these efforts have failed, Hague said Britain was ready to return to the Security Council to call again to give a united international response "to the clear threat to international peace and security."
activists Syrian opposition rejected Annan so naive to believe that Assad appears to act in good faith. But independent commentators insisted that it was realistic. "The object of this exercise is to maneuver the Russians in a position where they must be in compliance with the international consensus," said a former adviser to the UN.
A lack of international will to intervene in Syria along the lines of NATO's role in Libya last year, no government is willing to admit that diplomatic efforts have been exhausted, even if the chances of success are slim is a private company as non-existent.
