As Nixon during the Watergate lawyer, I can say about the cost of the legal team of News Corp., the scandal does not include time
Americans are very interested in developing the scandal of Rupert Murdoch in the UK. As I wrote a few weeks ago, has striking parallels with Watergate, offering an observation based on personal knowledge and experience. (I'm sure I speak for many Americans when he cries a note of thanks to The Guardian, journalism, Murdoch, whose history is so good, and in many cases better than the work of legendary Washington Post During the Watergate.) Many Americans are wondering if this scandal jump the Atlantic or to remain "contained" in Britain. Because of Watergate, I have some familiarity with the containment -. When it works
The answer depends on the width and depth of the illegal conduct. Cover-ups rarely work. At this point, we know very little about News Corp. cover, but signs have emerged. Although not an ideal measure of crime, I think there is generally a direct correlation between the lawyers and the severity of the problem. As a result, I was watching the lawyers who have become key players in this story, and his actions suggest that this scandal will not be included in the UK. Instead, over time, become a scandal, but perhaps with less impact than in the UK, taking into account the team of legal experts currently at work.
News Corp. has retained one of the most expensive commercial lawyers in London, Lord Grabiner, who apparently bills of £ 3,000 per hour. Although Grabiner has a reputation for miracles in dispute, it seems that he was hired to give credibility to an independent management and research of the Standards Committee of complaints phone-hacking, corruption and related criminal police. To help Grabiner, News Corp's London office has maintained a law firm in Washington, Arnold & Porter - London, whose partner, Kathleen Harris, became a lawyer experienced in criminal defense. Harris served as political adviser to the group's high level strategic business fraud office serious fraud.
United KingdomThis search for self-reports of committees Murdoch's lead counsel in the United States, a safe relatively recent: Joel Klein, who joined News Corp., after a period As rector of the New York school system. Klein reported his salary includes $ 2 million to bring the company in the education sector for-profit -. The work that has probably now on the side
When the scandal broke in the UK, Klein was with Murdoch at a conference in Sun Valley, Idaho. And Murdoch was a great fixer. Klein was too new for News Corp to be involved in something wrong, and also has impeccable references entities (Harvard Law US Supreme Court Law Clerk, a law firm and success). Klein served as an assistant in the White House during the Whitewater scandal of Bill Clinton, and the Attorney General of competition. Known for his ego, perseverance and integrity, Klein was in charge of Murdoch.
- addition of Arnold & Porter, Klein and Dinh held another large law firm in Washington, Williams & Connolly, and corporate criminal defense lawyer skilled, Brendan Sullivan, to assist in criminal investigations in the United States. Klein and Mark Mendelsohn held Dinh, who until recently was the deputy head of the Fraud Section, Criminal Division, the U. S. Department of Justice and includes the thoughts of the treatment department under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (which prohibits U.S. companies from bribing help your business abroad, and seems applicable to some of the allegations against News Corp).
- addition, it has hired former Attorney General Michael Mukasey Bush and former U.S. attorney in Manhattan, Mary Jo White, Debevoise & Plimpton to both assist in the investigation. A criminal is always a matter of discretion, and Klein, Dinh and his subcontractors are friends and former colleagues of those who could carry out any process of News Corp.
board of News Corp., held its first meeting since the scandal broke in the UK, in Los Angeles on August 9. That the lawyer did or failed to inform policy is not known. After the meeting, August 10, Murdoch made a statement unless the public lighting, largely absolved the whole company, except for operations in the UK, during a conference call with financial analysts. In fact, said he was "shocked" to learn of the crime in the New World. (This voice was just so I do not know if he winked and crossed his fingers when he made his statements.)
August 10, News Corp. has filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission that included a statement of carefully selected reports at the end of World News "after allegations of hacking and phone payments police. Because of these allegations, the company is subject to various ongoing investigations by regulators in the United Kingdom and the United States and governmental authorities, including investigations to determine if similar behavior could have been place in the company's subsidiaries outside the United Kingdom. The company is cooperating with the investigation. "This statement is far less certain that the most radical statement when calling Murdoch, August 10.
