Mat Byway, whose children attend primary school at Ashley Walton-on-Thames has helped plant a school garden with 28 varieties of apples native of Surrey, Claygate Pearmain, Pippin as shells, Shoesmith, Gold Command, and Joybells. The school will use the garden in their science classes. Byway Cribsheet said the project is to teach children about sustainability and the need to eat local fruits. He said: "We want to reclaim space in the garden to similar projects in schools across the country."

The apple trees are planted in winter. Ashley Elementary has developed a resource kit for schools is available on request. Schools can call on 01795 536250 Brogdale for more information.
