A small group of parents in Surrey launch a national initiative on aid to central schools apples. Mat Byway, whose children attend primary school at Ashley Walton-on-Thames has helped plant a school garden with 28 varieties of apples native of Surrey, Claygate Pearmain, Pippin as shells, Shoesmith, Gold Command, and Joybells. The school will use the garden in their science classes. Byway Cribsheet said the project is to teach children about sustainability and the need to eat local fruits. He said: "We want to reclaim space in the garden to similar projects in schools across the country."

Brogdale, home of the national collection of fruit in Britain, offers free advice to schools wishing to plant trees on their land of Apple. Brogdale has over 2040 varieties of apples in his collection, and is ready to help the public learn and grow less well-known local varieties of apples. Guide Ted Hobday Brogdale leader, said: "The retail market only support a small number of varieties that are well managed, without bruising and maintain and we must help save the varieties that are not in the retail market ..
