Too often the image of a lawyer who has a drink in hand and the legal profession at an alarming rate of alcoholism
6:00 p.m. on weekdays and from El Vino, the Fleet Street haunt of lawyers and judges recognized, is full. According to the demographics of the legal profession, the drinkers are mostly white, middle-aged men, ties loosened and rosy, and instead discuss their Merlot and Rioja.
through the Seven Stars, another meeting place for lawyers, a similar scene is played, but with pints of beer instead of wine glasses, as the dominant medium of alcohol. The city of York, just around the corner of High Holborn, doing well, too - as they are, come to think of him, all the pubs to stay overnight as I stroll through the inns of the region Cup in London. Not that this should be a surprise, the lawyers have a reputation for a drink after all
For many alarming that gets out of hand. A recent published research, 15-24% of lawyers suffer from alcoholism during their career. LawCare, a charity established in 1997 to assist members of the bar facing the problems of stress, says that the personality-oriented, a little tense with a typical lawyer, combined with the difficult nature of work, makes them particularly sensitive to drinking in excess.
"The law is a stressful job with long hours and require strict observance of the standards consistently high and alcohol is a quick, easy access," said Anna Buttimore, a door- word for charity, adding that lawyers "tend to be reluctant to admit that there may be problems with stress and problems associated with addiction."
another factor in the excessive use of lawyers is the central role of alcohol in the professional culture of law. While liquid lunches are less frequent than in the past, drunk evening dinner guests are a regular feature of the working week of experienced lawyers business. Those associated with large companies are generally required to attend two to three functions a week, with a bit of confidence to me that he found it almost impossible to get through these nights without drinking. "I'm not sure I could deal with the networking sober," he joked.
Lawyersdo less chatter, but the vagaries of cases, they spend their lives in the heart of raising a long tradition of rituals involving downtime alcohol. Porto flows freely during the regular dinners run by bar associations, and the drink is a central element of many specialized clubs and societies of the Bar. Meanwhile, the myth of the legendary heavy drinker of professionals in the past, both real and fictional, such as quality control dissidents George Carman and John Mortimer Rumpole of Bailey Claret lover, perceptions of lawyers continues "as to live their lives.
"They do not call the bar for anything," jokes Dr Neil Brener, a psychiatrist at the Priory, adding that lawyers are a disproportionate number of clients (which also include bankers, accountants and doctors).
Is there any hope of changing this culture? Well, there are at least some positive signs. The profession has certainly become better to be master of his problems with stress and alcohol, gradually move away from an approach that favored substance abuse problems swept under the rug a more open attitude to address the causes of stress n is no longer taboo. Online resources such as LawCare leaves in the treatment of alcoholics in the workplace helped - especially in small businesses and chambers of lawyers who do not have staff trained human resources to help employees stressed
- At one point he says: "A week later he was exaggerating a little wine and when the senior partner came to me in my office at 10.00 I was very drunk as a result the company offered me .. I, and I said I would give a good reference if I agreed to do so. "
