As part of our plan to create a new vision for London we crowdsourcing views over the city and its economy
The global financial crisis has raised questions about the nature of London's economy. Suddenly, seemingly invincible financial sector has become a concern. Is strictly regulated enough? London is, therefore, the United Kingdom as a whole, depends too? In the case of capital looking to diversify? Are you doing enough to London to his other heavy industries, including legal services, media, education, medical research, tourism and culture? Could more be done to develop new technologies for the high, green industries, and manufacturing?
such issues become more urgent in view of the chronic unemployment in London, especially among young gap, vast wealth and enormous health disparities. What could and should be our mayor is to model our capitalist metropolis and function in the best long term interest of all its inhabitants?
It should be noted that both Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson, supposedly diametrically opposed ideologies, have cultivated relationships with wealth and power of the Square Mile and popular approval. Note, also, that the two mayors have seen the good economic sense to support the living wage in London.
mayor's ability to influence international market forces is, of course, limited. But localism agenda of the Government, the City Council took a more direct control over the levers to stimulate economic development and direction of regeneration. There will be less money to spend than before, but the new provisions should allow the next mayor to put at least some parts of a strategic economic force. London Development Zones can be designated. Johnson recently announced that the responsibility for the future after the London 2012 Olympic Park and its surroundings will be taken by the Development Corporation for the first mayor. The mayor can also encourage innovation and decentralization of the company on behalf of poor and peripheral areas of London, with grants for street improvements in the public domain, and have some involvement in skills and initiatives job.
But many times the next mayor will be invested in the extraction of funds from central government. In comparison with the mayors of New York, Johnson and Livingstone are mere supplicants when it comes to raising funds for public investment in transport infrastructure and others. Mayor Bloomberg says over 60% of gross revenues from local taxes, compared to its counterpart in London, is less than 10%. If our model Mayor lobby the government for something similar?
Two representatives of all London companies have published their manifesto for what you want the next mayor to do. London First, which represents many large companies in the capital and its universities, wants more flights to Heathrow, promoting more abroad, and a warm welcome to international students and visitors, among other things. London Chambers of Commerce and the wishes of industry priorities include investment in the transport system to keep rates low, more police who work late to help the economy during the night, and an extension of Wi -Fi throughout the capital. What would your priority list?

BABELrevisited suggests the following:
taxes on the rich in the eyes so they can go and practice their deceit elsewhere, as always, are promising.
DaveHill replies:
have to ask the national government in this regard. The mayor has no power -. Although he / she can campaign for change
davidabsalom suggests the following:
Chambers of Commerce in London and wishes of the industry include investment priorities in the transport system to keep rates low, more police who work late to help the economy during night, and extension of Wi-Fi throughout the capital. At least two of them could be provided by private companies. Funny how companies always has its hand to the taxpayer.DaveHill replies:
In an age model of government spending cuts, I think the mayor should make a strong case for the largest companies in London, to contribute more to different types of infrastructure improvements necessary. The City of London Corporation, Canary Wharf and BAA contribute to the cost of Crossrail, like other businesses in London with an additional commercial rate. Maybe I should have more of this kind of thing.
door suggests the following:
Bring the city of London, under democratic control, to end its role as a center of a global network of tax havens and force their accounts and business practices to light, lead to the billion hidden in trust not taxable economy. course, this can be done as part of a rule-based global economy, but the pressure may be placed on the subject here, and described the problems and alternatives.
DaveHill replies:
looks like it could be a vote-winner. Something?
CritiqueandSalve suggests the following:
think you must first commit to distinguish between residents and citizens and law enforcement. illegal immigrants cost citizens (the British) housing and jobs of course.
unless you deal with this, his new show is not different from previous ones.
DaveHill replies:
As Boris Johnson, and the citizens of London, obtained support amnesty for illegal immigrants, because it allows them to find legitimate jobs and placed in the tax system. As Boris says, that will never be arrested and sent to both.
It is worth reflecting on the fact that many people leave each year to London from other parts of Britain, and that the main reason for the rapid growth of the capital Population migration is not inward, but the birth rate higher than the mortality rate among the existing London.
- davidabsalom suggests the following: is certainly no reason why the Chambers of Commerce and Industry can not organize its members to cover Wi-Fi throughout the city. Great Society, and all that.
role
definitely a coordinator and / or leadership to the mayor there, I think. A prestigious project could also attract a leading provider of these services at a discounted price.
