medical report warns Israeli courts Khader Adnan is in immediate danger, after 61 days of protest against his "administrative detention"
A Palestinian prisoner in his 61st day of hunger strike while chained to a bed in an Israeli hospital is in immediate danger of death, according to a medical report submitted to the Supreme Court in an effort to obtain his release.
Khader Adnan, 33, a baker from a village near Jenin, was detained without charge by Israeli authorities within four months of "administrative detention". He began his hunger strike on December 18, the day after his arrest.
Lawyers
Adnancalled for their release to the Supreme Court of Israel, but no date has been set for the hearing. The situation was urgent, Cassandra Mahmoud's lawyer told the Guardian. "This is the last chance. The medical report says he can die at any moment. We expect to achieve, but I am optimistic."
Needless
Adnan is hunger in protest against his detention without charge or being informed of any evidence against him, and their reports of abuse and degrading treatment during arrest and interrogation. This is his ninth arrest, according to reports. In the past, acted as spokesman for the militant group Islamic Jihad.
was examined by a doctor from Physicians for Human Rights on Wednesday at Ziv Hospital in Safed Rebecca. Adnan was chained by two legs and one arm, the doctor said.
"He lost 30 pounds and weighs 60 kg. Suffering from abdominal pain, vomiting, sometimes with blood and headaches ... His general condition is very weak and pale, her tongue is soft, has a slight bleeding gums, dry skin, hair loss, muscle atrophy and significant. His pulse is weak, blood pressure 100/75. It is permanently connected to a heart monitor. "
Adnan agree to be treated with an infusion of fluids and salts, with the addition of glucose and vitamins, the doctor said. "However, it maintains its refusal to end his hunger strike." He was lucid, conscious.
he was "in immediate danger of death," the doctor. "A hunger strike absolute results of more than 50 days in the distribution of muscles ... and the creation of toxins in the body of death. Can occur suddenly due to heart failure or the result of an infection after the collapse of the immune system. bleeding in the digestive tract or liver and kidney failure is possible.
"A fast beyond 70 days does not improve survival. Infusion of fluids, salts and adjusting the addition of glucose and vitamin can not avoid certain death due a prolonged hunger strike. "
- wife of Adnan, Randa, his two daughters and his father were allowed to visit him on Wednesday, but his mother, his sister and his brother were rejected. "Randa said he was very thin and his condition worsens, but his mental health is good," said his sister Maali family home area Arrada. "But the whole family is worried, and Randa not know if it'll ever see."
After the tour, Adnan's father, said in a demonstration outside the hospital in solidarity with Adnan, reports that the morale of his son was high. "He has not done this hunger strike for their own good, but yearns for freedom for his people, his countrymen to live with heads held high, without occupation," said Adnan demonstrators Jihad.
