most of us are afraid of cancer, and doubts that are being revised. Now, scientists are finally admitting to problems
may seem obvious to move up to the breast clinic, detect when the call is dropped in the mailbox. Most of us are afraid of cancer. Most of us have heard that if caught early, there is more chance of recovery.
But in recent years there has been a growing dissent from orthodoxy - and was not anti-doctors, suspected drug toxicity. Came within the scientific community. Those who ask the big question - is the breast exam is always a good thing? - Son of a group with one of the most respected scientific pedigrees. This is the Cochrane Collaboration, set up to weigh all the evidence and tell us what works and what does not.
They published their findings in medical journals like The Lancet and British Medical Journal, and news organizations have published stories - but every time I have asked the NHS screening program for comment, the results of Cochrane were summarily dismissed. Most scientists, we are told, is not according to Cochrane Researchers. Studies are cited showing that screening saves lives.
I felt for some time that there was an element in all this "to avoid frightening the horses", and personally I think underestimated - or rather, insults - the intelligence of women. The test is not as immunization. We will not infect anyone, if not going for breast screening. If cancer is lost, a person who does not suffer population as a whole. However, the information in the records of the NHS screening, echoing the official release of Cochrane, barely mentions the possible disadvantages of the future.
- And yes, there are drawbacks. No longer disputed that there is an "over-diagnosis" and "overtreatment." X-rays that show is often not much more than a blip on a screen. Once upon a time, doctors believed that cancer each of which, if not, become an aggressive cancer with the potential to kill. A couple of decades, the treatment of breast cancer was the root and branch - a "Halsted" mastectomy, the surgeon removes the name the breast as much as he could in the belief that he was saving lives. It does not happen either - now conservative surgery is as limited as possible. Doctors try to offer smaller, more efficient, the amount of surgery, drugs and radiation due to long-term damage they can cause.
the treatment of breast cancer these days is much better than when testing began. Survival rates are high. The emergency treatment of an invisible group of mutant cells may not be necessary. The detection is always important and should be available to those interested - especially for women whose family history or other factors put them at high risk. But women should be informed of the potential advantages and disadvantages so they can make an informed decision - and where X-rays taken something, maybe sometimes there may be a waiting list and see the option, as in the prostate cancer men
