corporate law firms are creating two tiers of lawyers using cheap labor to develop outside the capital
not only North Move the BBC. Large corporate law firms that represented most of the recent growth of the legal profession are decreasing their expensive centers of London and the expansion in the regions, too.
last week, Allen & Overy - one of five companies "magic circle" of the law leading UK legal market - confirmed that it was reducing its consumption graduate in London by 14% (the company is taking in 25% of students from 2008) as it prepares to launch a "support center" in Belfast at low cost. In addition to providing general support in areas such as IT and human resources, the center will employ local lawyers to handle some of the most basic legal tasks currently performed by junior priced lawyers in London.
The news follows a similar approach by fellow corporate law giant Herbert Smith, who established a support office in Belfast in April after a round of layoffs after the financial crisis.
To help finance their new projects, the pair - who have a combined turnover of £ 1.5 billion - which share almost 3 million pounds of taxpayers' money granted part of a regional development grant scheme to encourage investment in the recession-hit Northern Ireland.
Meanwhile, competitors are taking advantage of existing regional offices, where they are sending an increasing number of lower level legal work to be done at lower rates. Addleshaw Goddard, for example, has significantly increased the number of paralegals who work to Manchester after the job cuts and the City of London base.
As this new style of operation takes over, two thirds of corporate counsel are emerging: the elite of London, whose wages are kept to a boom of £ 60,000 - £ 1m and more, and the regional support prices paid about £ 20,000 -. 30,000 pounds and have a more limited scope for career progression
- The division is ready to be exacerbated by recent developments in legal education, where the removal of the cap undergraduate enrollment is the creation of different types of law degree. Under the new regime, rich students able to make a nice £ 27,000 of Arts from the traditional university, followed by a postgraduate course £ 9000 conversion of the law - a route favored by law firms the City. Some might even give the New College AC Grayling Human LLB luxury £ 64,000 a whirlwind.
no doubt that corporate offices in London continue to insist on hiring decisions are based on the selection of the best "talent". But the reality is that the candidate who received three years of the attention of leading academics, as will probably be more polite - or "talent" - someone who has progressed through a program LLB in two years . And that's before factors such as the caliber of students at the University of contacts - important in the upper part of the law of the city, where they develop relationships with clients -. It takes into account
