The director was courted by Michael Gove, after achieving spectacular results in Hackney Mossbourne academy
An administrator hailed as a "miracle worker" to dramatically improve failing schools in the city will be the new head of Ofsted.
Sir Michael Wilshaw, famous for showing "tough love" for students and their parents, will start his new job in January 2012.
will be a hearing prior to the appointment of members of the cross-party education select committee and the nomination is subject to approval by the Privy Council.
64, fills a role left vacant in June when the former head of Ofsted, Christine Gilbert, left early. Gilbert said he was under pressure to leave after the coalition government came to power.
Wilshaw, who was knighted in 2000 for services to education, said to have been courted for the role for some time. Michael Gove, the education secretary, called him "my hero".
The son of a postman lawyer perspective that are similar to Gove. He argues strongly for a return to traditional subjects, strong discipline, the long school day and no excuses.
Wilshaw converted to Catholicism of St. Bonaventure boys' school in Forest Gate, east London, in one of the most improved schools in the country as director between 1985 and 2003.
But he is best known for his current role as CEO of Mossbourne Academy in Hackney. The school, within a mile of the Pembury estate - the scene of the greatest confrontation during the riots in London this summer - has scored that many pay tuition are envious. Replaced Hackney Downs School, which has been described as the worst in Britain before closing in 1995. This summer, after the first A-level results, seven students Mossbourne places in Cambridge, went to the Royal College of Music and 65% went to Russell Group institutions - the 20 most prestigious universities the United Kingdom
- About 85% of students achieved five A * Mossbourne GCSE including English and mathematics. The school is a very deprived catchment, with 40% free school meals and 30% in the register of special needs.
- Wilshaw, who was born in India and came to Britain as a child, has made a restraining order from his parents who misbehave and think nothing of sending students home to use the wrong color shoes.
He will take the helm at a time when the country's educational landscape is changing. One in three students now attend academies and a new section of free schools should be announced shortly. In short Ofsted is thinner than it was for the predecessor of Wilshaw. From January, will focus more on the quality of student conduct, teachers, and reading for children. The intention to make it harder to give schools a grade of "outstanding."
Gove said he could not imagine a better person to lead Ofsted. "It is one of the best educators of his generation ... He transformed the fortunes of thousands of children during his time as director.
