Tunstall and James Morrison among British artists appearing on songs to save a life, awareness, support was provided by the charity Samaritan

A group of British artists came together to make an album for charity Samaritans. Songs to save a life is a collection of original songs and covers recorded by, among others, KT Tunstall, James Morrison, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Ed Harcourt.

The album is the result of Richard musician / producer Cardwell. Having toured with Annie Lennox as musical director, Cardwell said he was inspired by the work you do in Africa for HIV patients to "give something back" to the founding of the organization to record a song life. After a chance meeting with Tony Maidment, a volunteer with the Samaritans, who decided the first project is an album to raise funds to increase awareness and charity. It seemed a natural choice. "A lot of people I know - family members and musicians who have worked for years - have suffered from depression," said Cardwell

health.com Research shows that people who work in the arts came in fifth place in the top 10 occupations with the highest rate of depression, with about 9% of reports a major depressive episode in recent years. Cardwell believes that the high rate among musicians was due to the uncertainty and professional life, and, in many cases, increased emotional sensitivity. However, he said, people in the arts are more comfortable talking about depression. He praised the artists for agreeing to lend their voices, not just for the record, but also for the debate on mental health.

Brook, prevailing fronts Orlen, one of the acts involved, described his battle against depression. "It was something I had problems with the age of maybe 12 or 13. He was like a black cloud follows me wherever I went. If a Samaritans hotline gave me, I was on the phone a moment. "

Cardwell explains each song included on the album has been carefully selected. The artists on the album chosen songs inspired by the charity made, including changes from David Bowie, covered by Morrison, Simple Minds "Do not You (Forget About Me) covered by Bill Fay Tunstall and not so afraid covered by Harcourt.

Everyone involved with the album gave their time for free and all profits go to the Samaritans. Catherine Johnstone, executive director of the charity, said: "By buying this album you can help save lives."
