brought justice to war-torn Sierra Leone
Robin Vincent, who died of cancer 67 years, was an unsung hero of the international movement for justice. When it was wobbly after 9 / 11, left the Department distinguished Lord Chancellor surrounding war-torn Sierra Leone, not just to establish an international tribunal, but did the job.
Its success is such that the United Nations addressed to him again, in desperate need of your experience, for the Tribunal of Lebanon (which deals with the 2005 assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri) above the ground. Today, with the former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic arrested, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi accused and a verdict imminent in the former Liberian president Charles Taylor, the principle of putting the political and military leaders on trial for crimes against Humanity seems accepted, but only because there is no evidence that it can work in practice. This owes much to test the management skills of Robin, the belief in justice and sense of fair play.
Worcester-Robin was born and raised, a cricketer of all the life that went straight from school to serve the courts, an assistant secretary for the judges of the county. His rare ability to cope with the egos of lawyers and judges and run a courtroom, while juggling the jury and the officers and members of the list, it was noted early and advanced so constant to the clerk of the entire Crown Court in Birmingham and Manchester.
Lord Chancellor's Department in 1986 led him to London, where he managed several divisions (including judicial appointments) before driving to the Forensic Services Agency from 1993 to 2001. Then the British Council has realized that its export was the unusual ability, and sent to cities in Russia to train administrators. Robin had found his mission - to bring justice to places where he had been absent for a long time
- Freetown was still a dangerous place where the Court began work in December 2002, especially with the prevalence of malaria. Several episodes did not stop Robin. With his assistant Robert Thompson, who has recruited and trained a team of officials and handled calmly, but cleverly with the judges of the UN bureaucracy, corruption and local too demanding. Its terrain is interspersed with flights to New York to advocate for resources to keep the cup in the company.
I had the privilege, as the first Chief Justice to work with Robin, the most important to establish an office of the defense by a "senior advisor" to correct through the organization for the continuation that was evident in Nuremberg and in the courts at the beginning of The Hague. This became a precedent for the courts later. Robin has also established a successful program to explain the Court's work in schools and at public meetings across the country. Transparency is a characteristic of his management style. When the rebel leader Foday Sankoh died of natural causes in our prison, the report thoroughly and quickly released his death prevented Robin in conspiracy theories to take hold.
